Lowcountry Zoo

Pawleys Island is a place that’s truly brimming over with rich history. If you happen to be someone who enjoys pursuing the stories of the past, and has an equal passion for great architecture, you’ll find that taking time to explore the many historic homes in this area is an inspiring and free way to spend some quality time alongside family and friends. Places like the Joseph Byth Allston House date back to the mid-1800s while the R.F.W. Allston House was a summer home utilized by Robert Allston between 1801 and 1864. Walking by the P.C.J. Weston House/Pelican Inn puts you in front of a façade that hasn’t changed much since 1858 while the All Saints Summer Parsonage is always a delight to admire and dates back to its construction in 1848.

Spend time Connecting with Wildlife

Visitors to Brookgreen Gardens can access the Lowcountry Zoo right on-site at 1931 Brookgreen Garden Drive in Murrells Inlet. The Lowcountry Zoo is open to the public daily from 9:30 am until 5:00 pm and is a terrific place to enjoy connecting with nature surrounded by amazing scenery. The Lowcountry Zoo is considered a vital element of Brookgreen Gardens’ mission and is fully accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums in South Carolina. When you explore animal habitats here, you’ll be encountering a variety of creatures that were either bred in captivity or have sustained injuries in the wild that don’t allow for reintegration. In this way, the Lowcountry Zoo functions as an educational center and a rehabilitation site where animals find second chances at life.

Experiences to Enjoy

For a more interactive visit to the Lowcountry Zoo, consider adding a Meet the Animals event to your itinerary, hosted daily at 2:30 pm. During this gathering, a staff member showcases a 30-minute program at the Campbell Center Program Shed, where you’ll get up close to animals native to the Southeast that work as ambassadors for their species. Afterward, head to Mother Nature’s Café, which is open from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm daily, and walk through the zoo alongside an on-site interpreter who can provide insight into animal behavior, feeding patterns, and more.
