Indulge in a Destination with a Rich History to Explore
When you enjoy time at the Hammock Shops Village on Pawleys Island, you’ll be stepping into a space that’s been delighting area locals and visitors alike since 1938. The Hammock Shops are often referred to as the heart of Pawleys and are found on Highway 17. The area originated with the rise of the hammock weaving business in Pawleys Island. History points to a riverboat captain who was ferrying rice and supplies between Waverly Mills and Georgetown as one of the first in the area to invest in this craft when grass-stuffed mattresses onboard became too hot for sleeping well during humid South Carolina nights in the summer.
In 1889, the riverboat captain designed a breathable and comfortable hammock to use instead made of cotton ropes. His creation inspired the local Lachicotte family to turn hammock weaving into a lucrative business endeavor in 1916. By 1925, the business of hammock weaving was booming on Pawleys Island and the family set up a small store on Highway 17. By 1938, the Original Hammock Shop opened its doors down the street and ever since that time, the area has only continued to grow and thrive as a center of commerce. Today, Hammock Shops Village includes 21 shops and 2 restaurants for visitors to enjoy. A visit here can include hammock weaving demonstrations as well as time shopping for everything from jewelry and hammocks to apparel and home goods. The Hammock Shops Village also hosts a playground, wine and candy shops as well as international wine-tasting sessions to try.
